Reasonable accommodation

Definition

Reasonable accommodation in the workplace refers to the necessary and appropriate modifications and adjustments required to enable disabled workers to enjoy and exercise all human rights and fundamental freedoms on an equal basis with others. However, such measures must only be provided by the employer if they do not impose a disproportionate or excessive burden on them.

Protection

Reasonable accommodation in the workplace must be guaranteed in both the public and private sectors. They find their legal basis not only in the Italian Constitution, but also in Law No. 18/2009, Legislative Decree No. 216/2003 and Legislative Decree No. 62/2024.
